This award-winning film depicts the everyday life of a servant girl in 1950s Saigon.
A young girl, Mùi, arrives in Saigon in 1951 to become a servant. While learning the routines of the household and getting to know its family members, she closely observes the smallest details of her new world.
Released in 1993, The Scent of Green Papaya was the first Vietnamese film submitted to the Academy Awards for consideration for Best Foreign Language Film. It remains the only Vietnamese submission to have secured a nomination. The first feature film by director Trần Anh Hùng, it won the César Award for Best Debut at the Cannes Film Festival.
This film screening is part of the 2025 Global Gathering Vietnam program series, which is funded by the Bettendorf Public Library Foundation.
