A discussion of Ruth Suckow's "Four Generations."

As part of a series of programs related to the Ruth Suckow traveling exhibit being hosted at the Bettendorf Public Library, Ruth Suckow Memorial Association Members Michael and Hedy Hustedde will lead a discussion of Suckow's short story "Four Generations," in which four generations of one family come together for a photograph, and tensions arise.

The literary critic and magazine editor, H.L. Mencken, said that Iowan Ruth Suckow (1892-1960) "was unquestionably...the most remarkable woman writing short stories in the Republic."  And he published everything she ever sent him.  The daughter of a Congregational minister, Suckow lived in many towns--large and small--throughout Iowa as she moved with her father from one church to another.  In her work, 43 short stories, 9 novels, and many essays, Suckow preserved and probed Iowa life from the 1880s through World War II.

Michael Hustedde is a Professor Emeritus from St. Ambrose University. Hedy Hustedde retired as librarian from Bettendorf Public Library after more than 30 years.

The Ruth Suckow traveling exhibit will be on display in the fireplace area from April 14th through May 12th. The travelling exhibit was made by The Ruth Suckow Memorial Association with support from Humanities Iowa.

Copies of the story will be available at the Information Desk. No registration is required.
